Purchase Philips SA1110/37 1 GB Flash MP3 Player (Black)

I agree with most of the negatives/CONS posted already. (e.g. the packaging IS DECEPTIVE, i.e. it APPEARS you are getting a unit the exact size and SHAPE of a 7-stick gum pack, but it's really quite a bit thicker, and triangular in cross-section.)

Also, I can see the *potential* for the USB cap to become loose-fitting, but after 24 months, mine's still snug. Knock on plastic.

OTOH, karma swung my way: i.e. agreed to pay $75 (incl. tax, May 2007) only because $40 mail-in rebate included from Office ____. Months go by, no rebate, visit customer website, clickety-click-click... then TWO $40 rebate checks show up! So they PAID ME $5 to take it off their hands, nyuk-nyuk-nyuk.

Later on, I would need that fiver to buy new Philips-Magnavox (ChiCom) earbuds, as the wire for first one channel, then the other, eventually broke inside the original plug's strain-relief. No violent bending involved, just normal use. Perhaps a right-angle plug would prove more durable?

PROS: 1) EASY (albeit slow) to load files on--it's ALPHABETICAL! (Wish my bloody Nokia phone were so straightforward!) If you want the folder called 'Xray Death Metal' to be first, just prefix a zero or 'a' to the title. For what you wish to be last, place a small 'z' in front of the name. Similarly inside the folders, simply prefix numerals to change the "natural" order to the desired sequence. Duh-simple. I like it.

2) Nice nuanced assortment of equalizers.

3) Handles several NON-MP3 formats, including some very compact versions of WMA. Kudos.

4) Voice memo function handy, voice quality very good, even in vehicle; more than adequate for dictation. (Have NOT tested it in high-din situation, e.g. lecture hall.)

5) Fits securely in the excellent and affordable Tunebelt AB3 armband.

6) Accurate and linear battery meter.

Pro/con: *does* remember exactly where you were in which file during battery swapout, but ONLY IF: a) you manually shutdown before battery dies completely; and b) you swap the battery quickly, say less than 20 secs. empty-bay time... as if it uses a small capacitor to keep "pointers" alive in a volatile memory...? Anyway, that's how it behaves.

CONS: 1) Agonizingly SLOW FF/REW function! This is the only REAL DEAL KILLER: It's only 4x normal speed! So to jump (crawl) to minute 30 of an hour-long podcast/language lesson/lecture, you're holding down the FF button for 7.5 minutes! Holy thumb-cramp, Batman! And with NO audio feedback (you know, that screechy accelerated sample-stream), so now you have to WATCH the timer to avoid overshoot... on an AUDIO device... oh, the cruel IRONY... Bloody HELL!

This could easily be remedied in firmware, but Philips has NEVER issued a single firmware update for this product, AFAICT. You know, like maybe after holding the FF/REW down for more than 30 seconds, it *accelerates* to perhaps 10x, or better yet, 16x!... HELLO Dutch persons!!!... ;')

2) Awkward ergonomics. Whereas w/ iPod you can activate anything/everything with a single hand/thumb, this SA1110 unit requires 2 thumbs plus 2 index fingers! I call it the "crab-pincer" interface, LOL.

3) Klugey, stilted menu navigation. e.g. the FF/REW button doubles as the folder-skip button, but there's WAY too many pushes of THREE separate buttons required to make this function-swap! Ridiculous. Annoying, actually. Not to mention AVOIDABLE... a little thinkin' and designin' next time 'round, eh?

RE: Battery life--I get about 4 hrs. per hybrid re-chargeable AAA. Since I rarely use it more than 2 hrs./day, no problem keeping it ready by rotating a pair of batteries dedicated for this purpose.Get more detail about Philips SA1110/37 1 GB Flash MP3 Player (Black).

Order Apple iPod Photo 60 GB White M9586LL/A (4th Generation) OLD MODEL

If there's one thing Apple knows how to do, it's to create hype and not a quality product. This is the second iPod I have owned and this is also junk. Every six months or so, I have to have it repaired. The first time was under warranty, so that was no big deal. Afterward, I bought a 1-year extended warranty for $60 just to protect myself and good thing I did. This iPod broke down again twice during the extended warranty period. Now that the warranty has expired, the battery died and cost $60 to replace. Two weeks after replacing the battery, the whole unit won't start up. I tried connecting the iPod to the computer to troubleshoot, but it doesn't even connect.

Unfortunately, my kids have to have an iPod because their friends have one. So now I've bought them the next generation iPod which also has video. I won't be surprised if the new one breaks down as well. I've already told my kids this is the last iPod I am ever buying and they will have to get jobs (no pun intended) if they ever want another one.

Bottom line:
==> When the iPod is working, it's good.
==> If you must buy an iPod, budget for the extended warranty because you will surely need it.
==> Consider other items, like the Creative Labs "Zen" series. I have owned two different Zens, and I have not had any problems at all.
==> I will not buy any other Apple iPod. I'm hoping a competitor will come out with something similar to the iPhone.Get more detail about Apple iPod Photo 60 GB White M9586LL/A (4th Generation) OLD MODEL.

Creative Zen Stone 1 GB MP3 Player (Pink)

Wonderful product! Gave it to my mother for Christmas and she's crazy about it. The 1GB is perfect for a few CDs worth of music and is very easy to load. Her only problem with it is that if it gets cold (like if she left it in the car overnight during cold weather) it needs to warm up before it will turn on. Not a huge deal but something to be aware of in case it happens to you. Don't panic! Just wait for a while.Get more detail about Creative Zen Stone 1 GB MP3 Player (Pink).

iriver H10 6 GB Digital MP3 Player Grey Top Quality

This device had problems almost from the very beginning. It would often freeze after syncing music or pictures to it. After just a few months it completely stopped working. A clock icon with the message "System initializing, Please wait" would remain on the screen and would not turn off unless the battery was removed, which it would continue doing after the battery was reinserted. The only way to undo this was to completely reformat and delete the memory. This issue would repeat every few months. The customer service on the iRiver site did not provide any helpful information. I finally called their number and the representative was very rude and ill-tempered, all with heavy background noise. He apparently knew nothing about the problem, insisting that it could be fixed by once again resetting the device.

I strongly recommend steering clear of all iRiver merchandise.Get more detail about iriver H10 6 GB Digital MP3 Player Grey.

Panasonic e-wear SV MP35 - Digital player / radio - flash 256 MB - WMA, MP3 Best Quality

I bought it just for the FM radio function, and that's all I've tried so far.
I program computers for a living, and still, I found it frustrating to learn how to use it. (I didn't realize I was getting so old.)
Once you learn it, it works pretty well. It gets better reception than an old Sony Walkman I have. If you listen mostly to just one station, it's pretty simple once you get it set up.

SanDisk Sansa Fuze 8 GB MP3 Player (Silver) + Accessory Kit Get it now!

I LOVE my Fuze. I chose it because I wanted more flexibility than I Pod gives for the types of files I can download. I wanted to be able to download audiobooks from the library and I love how easy that is. I did have some trouble figuring out how to download videos, but Sansa Tech help was great. You can download from ITunes (podcasts... etc) and they will transfer to your windows media player seemlessly. Videos require a conversion. Something I like about my fuze that isn't available on Ipod is that I can delete files right from the fuze (good for managing things I have already listened to). For the price, I am really happy!!!Get more detail about SanDisk Sansa Fuze 8 GB MP3 Player (Silver) + Accessory Kit.

Rca Th1101 Pearl Series Thumbdrive Mp3 Player (1 Gb) Buy Now

This is the perfect MP3 player for me and my needs. I sometimes take 25-100 mile bike rides and that's why I chose this MP3 player. The majority of MP3 players don't take batteries (they're charged by your computer when you connect them to the USB port). The problem with all the MP3 players on the market today (excluding the Pearl) is when you're on the "x"th mile of a bike ride or in the middle of the wilderness, and the batteries run out, you can't just hook it up to some USB port (which is unnecessary with this MP3 player because it takes a battery). It's as if all the other MP3 players on the market expect you to have a computer with you so you listen to music for hours (or days) on end. The PEARL mp3 player is perfect FOR ME because: it take a battery, it's small, it's durable, it's cheap and has the ability to hold plenty of mp3s to keep me "charged up" when I'm half way through a long bike ride.

I've owned two of these MP3 players so far and I've had no problems with either of them. The only reason I bought a 2nd one is because I accidentally dropped my first mp3 player into the ocean. And although I expected it to be broke from being dipped in the ocean, it still worked. The display was messed up a little from the salty water. This is an outstanding MP3 player all around. If you take long trips AND can't hook up to some USB port, THIS IS THE MP3 PLAYER YOU WANT. I highly recommend it, 5 stars!Get more detail about Rca Th1101 Pearl Series Thumbdrive Mp3 Player (1 Gb).

RCA TH1802 2 GB Pearl MP3 Player With FM Radio Right now

The only plus for this MP3 player is the size, it's very small and can fit in a pocket. It does have a clip, but the clip is so cheaply made and comes off very easily so that you would not want to use it because you could lose the MP3 player. I do like the direct USB connectivity however. I do not like the battery, it should have a rechargable battery, instead you must constantly change batteries. Also you cannot add memory. I would not recommend this item. For the price, buy a Sansa Fuze, which is very comparable to an Ipod. Get more detail about RCA TH1802 2 GB Pearl MP3 Player With FM Radio.

Lowest Price SanDisk Sansa Fuze 8 GB MP3 Player (Silver) + 8GB Deluxe Accessory Kit

Like all the extra stuff you get with this bundle. The player is great. I use it on my overseas plane rides to watch movies and listen to movies. And having 8G of internal memory and 8G mini card means a lot of music and movies. I was disappointed in the speakers. Used them one and that was it.Get more detail about SanDisk Sansa Fuze 8 GB MP3 Player (Silver) + 8GB Deluxe Accessory Kit.

Low Price Apple iPod nano 8 GB AAC/MP3 Player Red (Product) RED (2nd Generation)

I believe that the Nano peaked with the 2nd Generation model. Generation 2 increased maximum capacity from 4GB to 8GB. The 3rd, 4th and 5th Generation models of course all have video capability. While the picture is crystal clear the screen is so small that it is impossible to seriously enjoy watching a movie on this device. I have watched a few on my G3 and G4 Nanos and realize that the video capability is more of a gimmick than a real selling point. Anyone who wants to watch movies on their ipod would be better served to get an ipod video or ipod touch. Of course you don't have to use your Gen 3+ nano to view video, you can use it to listen to music and it will display the album artwork on a beautiful, larger screen than the Gen 2 nano. Here is my problem with that - if you are like me, and you skip from song to song on your ipod either in shuffle mode or picking the song, the Gen 3+ nano goes through the battery charge very quickly because of the large bright screen. Unless you keep the nano in your pocket with the display off you will get nowhere near the published battery life. So for anyone who wants to use the nano for music only and doesn't want to constantly charge it the 2nd generation nano was the best model. Of course Apple doesn't sell them anymore (even refurbished) and one is forced to go the ebay route. Each subsequent nano release has more bells and whistles which don't really do much for me. If you want the small size of the nano and are just interested in the music you have to go back a few generations.Get more detail about Apple iPod nano 8 GB AAC/MP3 Player Red (Product) RED (2nd Generation).
