Creative Zen Micro 6 GB MP3 Player Black Review

So I bought this player in summer 2005 and it still works. I don't really have that much against it because it has lasted all of this time. There were a couple of times I broke it by dropping it on the floor but after opening it and making sure everything is in its place, I haven't had any trouble with it. The only complaint now I have is the battery life but then again that's to be expected when its been used constantly for over 4 years. I'm really sad that they don't make it anymore or at least have a software that works with Windows Vista. But then again, nothing works with Vista. I know that this wasn't the most helpful review but if you're wondering if Creative mp3 players last- well they do even if you don't take the best of care with them.

This was a great idea but the design stinks. First off the arm band holder does not fit the mp3 player correctly. There are holes in the side of the holder and the only thing that lines up correctly is the head phone jack. The controls are not easily accessible when in the armband and the hold button lock on when inserted and is hidden when in the armband. It comes with some weird head phones that have a string connecting the two ear buds. I've never seen something like this and not sure if your supposed to wear the them with the wire in front, behind or around you neck. The head phone jack is not a standard size so they did include a clunky adapter if you wanted to use one of your own. The usb jack is non standard also with a 6 inch cord. This was my first clue that this device was suspect when they used a proprietary 4 pin usb connection. The device does not play all of my mp3 files instead giving an error Invalid Format. My sansa mp3 player had no problem with these files. It is very very hard and confusing to use. There is a rocker button on top that controls most of it but very hard to and not intuitive to navigate. This device instead has a RECord button on the front of it. Why would you want to record with an athletic mp3 player? They should have made better use of this button for something else. Creative Singapore would not repair it either, but sold me a refurb unit in March 2009. This latest unit has frozen as well in October 2009 (only 7 months later).

The Creative website and "customer service" (LOL) are all unhelpful and not customer-focused. I have tried the "Format All", "Reload Firmware" and "Reboot" modes, as suggested. Nothing works. Even Creative knows they are selling junk, as they will no longer repair these MP3 players.

Buying Philips GoGear 4 GB MP3 player

I've had the 4gb silver version for a couple of months now. Primarily used at the gym and during some outdoor sports (e.g. biking, snowboarding). Overall I have to say this is good small MP3 player, it has few shortcomings but it still does its job pretty well.

PROS:
1) Size and portability: If your used to the old shuffle, this one compares in size. The clip comes in very handy in the gym, especially when your gym clothes don't have pockets.
2) Construction: This Philips GoGear is solid! The outer shell is a brushed metal and hasn't shown any finger prints or scratches yet. The inner plastic components (under the metal) are plastic but seem pretty durable. I have no fears about dropping this little MP3 player. One more thing, while the MP3 player is solidly built it is very light, the few times it has fallen off my clothes it just hangs off the headphone cord.
3) This is a good looking little MP3 player with the brushed metal finish and curved design. Definitely gives the new shuffle a run for its money.
4) Compatibility: Is recognized right away by windows media player and syncs flawlessly.
5) Price: For less than a new 2gb shuffle you get double the memory. A very good deal.
6) Radio: Having radio functionality on a workout MP3 player is a must if you're into biking and running and want to catch up local news or listen to local radio.

CONS:
1) Sound quality: First I have to say that this MP3 player does sound good, but there are some aspects of the sound that drag it down. While the philips does sound good, it is not the best. I have another 2gb sony that I use for gym at times and there is definitely a drop in sound quality compared to the sony. For me it predominantly has to do with the bass and richness of the music, it seems like the philips is trying to produce too much of it. So what I get alot of times is the sound of static and too much bass for that can't be handled by the headphones, I've tried this with various types of headphones from philips to bose headphones and I get the same thing. Now I'm not sure if this has to do with the file format I have my music in, I have all my music as WAV files for better quality.
2) Music playback: At times the music just cuts out for about half a second and then plays again. This doesn't happen with every song, but it does happen most of the time when I'm at the gym.
3) Software compatibility: There is a manager software that is meant for updating the firmware on the player. Tried using a couple of times to see if it would take care of the sound quality and music playback issues. The software does not seem to be compatible with windows 7. Got it to work on a computer running windows XP.
4) Button sizes: With the exception of the power button. The other buttons are pretty small. For individuals with big hands I can see how this may be an issue.

To be fair to this product I would give a 3 1/2 out of 5 (could only chose 3 stars on menu). If Philips fixes the sound quality and playback issue on this player, that would bring it to a five out of five.

I had the Archos 604 for 2 years, it fell out of my pocket one day and I got a recovery 2 error and it never worked again. You can send it to Archos and they will fix it for a nominal fee-which is unknown until you receive the bill.
I purchased this Archos 604 Wifi because we just recently purchased a wireless router and was very excited about this product except the internet is so slow and you cannot get to sites that you want to visit-to check email or networking sites. I had a problem with it one day, it just was stuck on the Archos screen. I contacted them and they told me to send it and they would fix it under warranty, so I sent it in, and 15 days later or more it came back. I was so excited that I loaded it all up with movies, watched 3 and started #4. While I was watching the 4th movie, which mind you was in less than a week the screen froze. I opened it up to reset it and I get a recovery 2 error. I call the company and the best that they can do for me is pay for the shipping. I am going on vacation and want this to bring with me and it won't be in ready in time. This product will work with Rhapsody that is by transfering music from your library. The Rhapsody subscription will not transfer songs from their site, to the player. The channels will not show up on the player info left side of Rhapsody. The channels will not transfer to the player. Rhapsody can not help you with this problem. They want you to do all kinds of worthless changes and it willl still not work. The player may be ok but it is worthless with Rhapsody. You might as well just use it as a USB transfer device. Another problem is that any pressure on the face of the player will change the music or shut the player off.
Amazon needs to take the Rhapsody off the description for this player.
